Hydroxyapatite (HA or HAp) is the main component of enamel, which gives an appearance of bright white and eliminates the diffuse reflectivity of light by closing the small pores of the enamel surface. Hydroxyapatite has long been among the most studied biomaterials in the medical field for both its proven biocompatibility and for being the main constituent of the mineral part of bone and teeth. HA represents 90% of the weight of the tooth enamel.

Since its approval as an anti-caries agent in 1993 in Japan, it has become available commercially in Europe in 2006 and in Canada in 2015. It is widely considered an effective, non-toxic alternative to fluoride which is known to cause developmental neurotoxicity as well as toxicity among adults at high levels of consumption.

The answer here is a little complicated. Fluoride has certainly been a key tool in the fight against dental caries (cavities) for well over 60 years. Conventional wisdom would still advocate for the inclusion of fluoride in toothpastes as well as drinking water (in countries including the USA).

However, several studies have found a link (and likely causation effect) between fluoride exposure and developmental (read: among children) neurotoxicity resulting in IQ deficits. The amount of fluoride used in toothpaste by itself is extremely unlikely to cause fluoride toxicity among adults.

However, since the 1980s, advances in dental science have rendered the use of fluoride in toothpaste unnecessary. Ingredients such as hydroxyapatite which occur naturally in the dentin and bones have been shown to be equally effective in preventing cavities while being completely non-toxic. We, at Daybreak, recommend using a fluoride-free toothpaste that contains non-toxic alternatives like HAp, bioactive glass etc. for tooth remineralization.

We use Bromelain (1%) and Papain (1%) in our unique formula which together make up the 2% of fruit enzymes in the Brighten Toothpaste.

Bromelain is derived from the stems and fruit of pineapple plants. Similarly, Papain is a proteolytic enzyme extracted from the raw fruit of the papaya plant. While both of these enzymes are known to have a significant number of health benefits when consumed as dietary supplements, they are also known to be effective stain removal agents when used on the surface of the tooth.

These natural enzymes are less abrasive than alternatives such as baking soda or charcoal and far less damaging than peroxide-based whitening solutions.

Conventional mouthwashes contain about 26% alcohol. This is roughly 6x the concentration of alcohol found in beer. Rinsing with these mouthwashes can lead to drying out of the mouth and disrupt the oral microbiome - the complex of bacteria in your mouth that performs several crucial functions..

A dry mouth can then lead to worsened bad breath, sloughing of the skin on the inside of your cheeks, and an overly acidic pH in your mouth—all of which interfere with the tooth remineralization process and put you at a higher risk of cavities.
